Testonica participates in just launched H2020 project IMMORTAL

In March 2015, work commenced on a European Union's Horizon 2020 Programme's collaborative research project H2020-ICT-2014-1-644905 IMMORTAL - Integrated Modelling, Fault Management, Verification and Reliable Design Environment for Cyber-Physical Systems. In frames of this project, a consortium of leading European academic and industrial players aim at combining their expertise in developing an integrated, cross-layer modeling based tool framework for fault management, verification and reliable design of dependable Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).

Testonica Lab aims at improvement of its on-chip Fault Management framework towards system Health Monitoring and Health-Awareness. Although, the electronics in mission-critical systems is normally hardened and equipped with fault tolerance and soft error mitigation schemes, the wear out accumulating over time would eventually lead to non-tolerable permanent defects that render the target application dead. In fact, the presence of permanent defects doesn’t necessarily mean the end of life if the electronic system is aware of its health status and thereby can cope with the reduced processing capacity.

The state-of-the-art strategies for fault tolerance and error mitigation do not contribute to self-awareness: they only help mitigating non-permanent faults. The technology trend observed today in microelectronics leads to system resilience that in addition to physical hardening and classical fault tolerance, would also exploit the extensive natural redundancy of multi-core systems together with a smarter task scheduling. In addition to checkers and protection logic, the health-awareness requires massive in-situ on-chip fault event data collection that can also be used for prognostics in complex space SoCs. There are some well-known domain-specific health-awareness techniques like the S.M.A.R.T technology in computer hard drives. However, no established solutions for SoCs are known. Testonica, in collaboration with other IMMORTAL partners, intends to fill this gap.
